What do you think of as tourist spots in Miyagi prefecture? Matsushima, one of the Japan’s three best scenic places? Or Sendai city where their local food Gyutan is famous? Today I’ll show you Okama of Miyagi prefecture. You’ll never believe that is made by nature in times.

Okama is a caldera lake and is located between Yamagata and Miyagi prefecture, where there’s Zao maountain range. If you stay at Zao area, it takes only about one hour to Okama by car from the area.

Okama

Its name, Okama comes from its shape. It looks like a pot and in Japanese pot is kama. The water of Okama is extremely acid and there is no living things in it. The mountain has exploded 26 times before and the last time was in 1895. The depth used to be 63 meter but now 27.6 meter because of a few times of the mountain wall’s breaking apart. On one hand, Miyagi has a famous nature view of winter, which is called Juhyo. Juhyo is trees with ice, which usually happens in this area. Some good weather conditions are needed. But on the other hand, Okama can represent summer season of Miyagi prefecture. You cannot visit Okama in winter. All the roads on the mountain range here will close. Never miss Okama when you come to Miyagi in summer season.

There are fences all the way around Okama. You can enjoy Okama from different angles.

On the way to Okama, there is a car park with the cable car. You can go to Okama by it too. When I visited, I went straight to Okama though! If you are lucky, you would see see of clouds. As going up and up, plants on the mountains are disappearing. You know that’s because we are beyond at a certain height where plants cannot grow anymore.
