Speaking of famous people in the Warring States period, you may think of the three guys, Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. I’ll talk about Toyotomi Hideyoshi this time. He was a troop to Oda Nobunaga. He was born in a farmer but started his carrier as troop. Later he became a member of Oda Nobunaga’s forces and his unique idea that no one else may think of was appearing. When Oda Nobunaga made preparation to march on Mino province, he asked Toyotomi Hideyoshi to build a castle in short time.

By the way, Toyotomi Hideyoshi isn’t his real name. I mean, he was first named another name and then changed it several times. At that time, his name was Kinoshita Fujikichiro.

Sunomata ichiya castle

Back to the story. Kinoshita Fujikichiro got to build a castle in a day. Can you guess how he did that? The answer is, he used the flow of the river, in front of the castle in the picture, to carry things. That of course came from his unique idea. He prepared for the castle whiling attacking back to his opponent. During the battle was suspended because of the rain, he put woods in the river to be carried from up to down in the flow. Then he built the castle in one night. He saved time to carry with the river. The name of the castle, Sunomataichiya castle is after the story. Oda Nobunaga was impressed with what Toyotomi Hideyoshi did. After the death of Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi entered the second rank of military commanders.

It is said that a young boy Hashiba Hideyoshi, who became Toyotomi Hideyoshi later, built the castle just overnight. – How is that possible? – I think I can hear you saying that. He had been preparing everything for the castle while fighting in a war. He never missed the best chance to complete his job.
